The Research & Innovation Office at Toyota Material Handling Europe have an innovation program where we conduct research to create a deeper understanding around accidents and incidents involving forklifts. This research is done in collaboration with Research Institutes of Sweden, RISE.

Background and purpose

The number of forklifts in Europe is increasing and so is also the accidents involving forklifts. This is a complex problem with many variables and our customers are looking for solutions. As a forklift designer and manufacturer, we can make a difference by offering productive solutions that can support accident avoidance or limit the damage caused on people and goods when happening.

Thesis description

Powered stackers and pallet trucks with foldable platform differs from almost all other forklifts since the driver has significantly less protection when and if a collision occurs. The mission is to develop design concepts and solution ideas for the next generation powered stacker/pallet truck.
The final project scope will be adapted and narrowed to fit the master thesis scope and the background of the students. Here are examples of potential requirements to fulfil in the design:

  • Protects the driver from any object penetrating the driver cockpit from the side (requirement) and from the back (option).
  • Hinders the driver from reflexively reaching out a leg or an arm to absorb the impact in a collision.
  • Hinders the driver from positioning arms or legs outside the protective barrier.
  • Could be operated both with the platform (if used) folded or unfolded.
  • Should be possible to operate in similarly tight spaces as todays’ stacker/pallet truck with folded platform.
  • Should have similar ramp climbing capabilities as todays’ stacker/pallet truck with fixed side protection barriers.
  • Should be similarly simple to enter or exit the driver cockpit.
  • Should be able to handle euro pallets with the maximum weight of 1500 kg.
