The Research & Innovation Office at Toyota Material Handling Europe have an innovation program where we conduct research to create a deeper understanding around accidents and incidents involving forklifts. This research is done in collaboration with Research Institutes of Sweden, RISE.
Background and purpose
The number of forklifts in Europe is increasing and so is also the accidents involving forklifts. This is a complex problem with many variables and our customers are looking for solutions. As a forklift designer and manufacturer, we can make a difference by offering productive solutions that can support accident avoidance or limit the damage caused on people and goods when happening.
Thesis description
Today there are multiple driver support systems developed in the automotive industry. These systems have proven themselves in helping drivers avoid accidents and they are more or less standard on new cars being sold. However, the environment where a forklift is used differs somewhat to an automotive traffic environment and therefor ADAS are probably not possible to be introduced on a forklift without adaption to the new traffic environment.
The mission is to develop design concepts around how ADAS could be introduced and adapted to add value to a forklift driver in a dense warehouse operation with intense forklift traffic. The final project scope will be adapted and narrowed to fit the master thesis scope and the background of the students.
Systems that potentially would add value are:
- Lane assist (Aisle assist)
- Emergency breaking
- Parking assistant (pallet pick-up/unload assist)
- Reverse camera
- Adaptive speed control
- Blind spot assistant
- Etc.
Additional ideas on new ADAS functions suitable for forklifts are welcome.
